Absorbency levels explained

Absorbency levels relate to the amount of urine a product can absorb before it needs changing. The higher the absorbency level, the more urine a product can absorb – so a higher absorbency would be most suitable for people with more severe levels of incontinence.

Choosing the right level of absorbency ensures that your incontinence pads or pants are as effective as possible in keeping you protected from leaks, ensuring you can carry on with your day-to-day activities without disruption.

At HARTMANN Direct, we use a simple visual droplets system to indicate how absorbent a product is. These are brightly coloured and visibly displayed on every product pack. Our droplets system covers a range of incontinence levels, from Very Slight to Extremely Severe.

Faecal incontinence products work in a slightly different way, here, the goal is to contain faeces and prevent leakage onto underwear or clothing.  A higher droplet product will not equate to better management of faecal matter.  In this instance, a close fitting product is recommended for containment, and the product should always be changed as soon as possible after a bowel movement.

Wetness Indicator explained

Many of the MoliCare® products include a wetness indicator which is integrated into the backsheet of the product, visible from the outside.  The wetness indicator is a printed pattern design within the product and when wet will blur or disappear as the product fills with urine.  Thie wetness indicator provides a good indication as to when the product needs to be changed. It is recommended to change the product once three quarters of the indicator blocks are blurred or have disappeared; the product has captured adequate urine and is ready to be replaced with a new pad.

Incontinence pads explained

What are incontinence pads?

Incontinence pads are absorbent pads which often have adhesive backings to secure them and are worn with normal underwear. People with urinary incontinence and bladder weakness wear incontinence pads to absorb any urine leakages and provide security. There is a huge range of pads to choose from – each with a different design, different qualities, and varying levels of absorbency.

Incontinence pads should not be confused with sanitary pads, sanitary pads are designed to capture menstruation fluids which are highly viscous.  Sanitary pads do not perform in the same way as an incontinence pad which are purpose designed to absorb fluids quickly and hold urine in place without leakages.  Incontinence pads also have a super absorbent core to retain urine, anti-leakage cuffs and neutralise unpleasant odours.

How often should incontinence pads be changed?

This depends on your level of incontinence. If you have the correct absorbency, your incontinence pad should only need to be changed every 3-4 hours but can be worn longer.  Many of the MoliCare® products have an integrated wetness indicator on the backsheet to guide you when to change the product without removal.  It is recommended to change the product once three quarters of the wetness indicator blocks have blurred or disappeared.

During the night, you should opt for a more absorbent pad such as an 8, 9 or 10 drop which you can wear for longer to ensure an uninterrupted sleep.

Incontinence pull up pants and all-in-one briefs or slips explained

There is a difference between incontinence pull up pants and an all-in-one brief.

  • Pull up pants are designed to look and feel like regular underwear and can be pulled up and down to use the toilet whilst also providing full protection from incontinence. This makes them ideal for people who are active and mobile who are able to change themselves. They are also ideal for people who may have some cognitive impairment such as Dementia and can become confused by wearing pads.
  • All-in-one briefs or incontinence slips are fitted with re-closable side tabs. This feature makes sure the wearer has a secure fit, and also makes changing easier. All-in-one briefs work especially well if the wearer is dependent on a carer to assist with their changing routine.

Skin Care

Good skin care is a vital part of any incontinence care routine.

What can happen without a good incontinence skin care routine?

When someone has incontinence, the skin around their genitals can become sore and damaged if a good changing routine is not maintained. If the person with incontinence is older, their skin may also be fragile, leaving it prone to damage. Without maintaining skin cleansing and care, fragile, sore skin can become broken, uncomfortable, painful and sometimes infected. The affected person may also develop skin conditions such as Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) or moisture lesions.

Which skin care products do you need for incontinence?

Any skin care products used on skin impacted by the effects of incontinence should be gentle, free of harsh chemicals and perfumes, pH balanced to maintain the natural acid protection mantle of the skin.
