Inside MoliCare® Technology

Good continence care comes down to how effectively a product fits the body, manages fluid, contains leaks during movement, and protects your skin. MoliCare® brings together some of the most advanced technologies that work at different stages of incontinence protection.

In this guide, we’ll look at the engineering tech behind MoliCare® including how these technologies work together to support effective continence care.

Key Takeaways

  • MoliCare® incontinence products are built with anatomical shaping in mind. Gender-specific designs help create a secure, body-contoured fit.

  • MoliCare® SkinGuard® absorbent core technology combines rapid acquisition layers, distribution channels and Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) to absorb and lock away fluid.

  • Water-repellent inner cuffs and the absorbent core work together to help contain fluid during sitting, lying down and repositioning.

  • Active Skin Protection® and pH 5.5 technology support the skin’s natural protective barrier and help manage factors associated with irritation.

  • ISO Drop Ratings provide useful guidance on absorbency, but fit, product format, mobility and individual needs also matter when choosing continence care.

MoliCare® Incontinence Products are Designed to Fit Around the Body

A good incontinence product should stay correctly positioned against the body for its absorbent and leakage-protection features to work effectively. This is why MoliCare® blends anatomical shaping with flexible fastening and internal barriers to create a fit that can adapt to different bodies and movements.

Anatomical Fit and Body Contouring

The engineering keeps in mind the fact that bodies come in different shapes, and people move in different ways. A one-size-fits-all approach to continence care can leave gaps. The product might shift, making it harder to contain fluid.

MoliCare® uses anatomically shaped cores designed to sit closer to the body.

  • Male pads are engineered with a V-shaped or pouch-like pocket design (often called a "pouch" or "shield"). This securely cups the male anatomy without compression. They include raised inner anti-leak cuffs along the sides to contain lateral flow.

  • Women’s pads have an hourglass or teardrop shape that mirrors female underwear, fitting snugly against the body to prevent gaps when walking, sitting, or standing.

Such a proper fit and contact position the absorbent area where it is needed. It makes it easier to support leakage protection as you walk, sit, lie down or change positions.

Adapting to Movement

Movement also presents another challenge as the body changes shape when you sit, stand, walk and move around. So, the product needs some flexibility too.

The technology used in products like MoliCare® Premium Elastic is designed to solve this. It combines elasticated side panels with two reclosable fastening tapes. These elastic panels allow the product to adapt to body shape and movement. The tapes can be adjusted during fitting to achieve a secure fit.

There is an advantage here for caregivers, too. With two tapes instead of the four used on traditional four-tape slips, the fastening process involves fewer application steps. It is definitely much faster and easier to handle!

MoliCare® products also use internal cuffs or barriers to create a physical boundary around the absorbent area. These barriers work alongside the anatomical shape of the product. As fluid enters the core, the cuffs help contain it within the intended absorption zone.

In general, there are different parts of the MoliCare® product design working  in tandem: anatomical shaping helps maintain close contact, innovative elastic technology helps keep the product securely positioned while the internal barriers provide an additional layer of containment.

MoliCare® SkinGuard® Absorbent Core Technology

Absorbency isn’t just about how much liquid a product can hold. Effective fluid management also depends on how quickly urine is taken away from the skin. There is also the aspect of how evenly it is distributed through the absorbent core and how securely it remains there.

This is where the MoliCare® SkinGuard® absorbent technology that features across the MoliCare® product range including in disposable pads,pull-ups, andbriefs comes in handy. The absorbent technology has three key components: a transfer layer, absorbent channels and Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP).

Rapid Fluid Acquisition Technology

The first job is to simply get the fluid away from the surface quickly. The acquisition and distribution layer sits beneath the topsheet. It is made from specially structured fibres. These fibres help draw liquid away from the surface and direct it into the absorbent core.

Think of this layer as the product's first route for incoming fluid. It helps prevent urine from simply sitting where it first makes contact. Instead, the liquid can move into the layers below, where the absorbent materials can get to work.

The science comes down to structure. The fibres create spaces through which liquid can travel. Their arrangement helps the material take in fluid and move it through the absorbent system.

This matters most when fluid arrives quickly. A sudden release gives the product very little time to respond. The faster the fluid can leave the surface, the less likely there will be pooling.

Performance testing has shown up to 64% faster absorption compared with previous MoliCare® generations, depending on the product!

Cellulose: The Fibrous Workhorse

Once fluid moves into the absorbent core, there is a cellulose fluff pulp that takes on a bigger role. The cellulose is made from wood-based fibres and forms a major part of the absorbent core. These fibres create a porous network that can take in liquid and help distribute it through the core.

Imagine pouring water onto a small patch of a dry sponge. The liquid does not need to stay in that one spot. It spreads through the surrounding material. The same basic principle matters inside an absorbent core.

It helps spread incoming fluid across the available absorbent area. That allows more of the core to participate in fluid management instead of leaving one section heavily loaded while other areas remain relatively unused.

The Super Absorbent Polymer Locks Fluid Into the Core

There is also the Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) which is found within the absorbent core. It is typically made from synthetic polymers like sodium polyacrylate. When it comes into contact with liquid, it absorbs the fluid and forms a gel-like structure. This helps immobilise the liquid within the core. The polymer helps hold the fluid within the absorbent structure instead of allowing it to move freely back towards the surface.

This fluid retention is vital in preventing re-wet or rather, the moisture that can return towards the surface after fluid has already been absorbed.

Acid-Treated Transfer Layer: Supporting PH Balance

Fluid management is not only about moving and retaining urine. The absorbent structure also plays a role in maintaining a skin-friendly environment.

There is an acid-treated transfer layer that’s part of the SkinGuard® Absorbent Core Technology. This is designed to support a pH balance of around 5.5. This pH is close to the skin’s natural acidic environment so it helps counter the effects of prolonged exposure to urine.

Together with rapid fluid acquisition and retention, pH-balanced technology helps create a more skin-friendly environment and supports the prevention of developing conditions like Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD).

FAQs

How does MoliCare® SkinGuard® absorbent core technology work?

MoliCare® technology combines several features to manage urine effectively and support skin protection. The absorbent core uses rapid fluid acquisition, distribution channels and SAP (super absorbent polymer) to move urine away from the skin and retain it within the core. Anatomical fit and leakage barriers help keep fluid contained during movement, while skin-protective features support the skin’s natural balance.

What is SkinGuard®  absorbent core technology in MoliCare® products?

SkinGuard® is the absorbent-core technology used in MoliCare® products. It combines three key elements: a transfer layer that quickly draws fluid away from the surface, absorbent channels that distribute fluid through the core, and SAP that absorbs and locks fluid into a gel. Together, these components support rapid absorption, fluid retention and reduced re-wet.

How does MoliCare® absorb urine so quickly?

MoliCare® uses a rapid fluid-acquisition layer to draw urine away from the skin-facing surface, while absorbent channels help distribute it through the core. This helps prevent fluid from pooling in one area.

What is SAP and why is it used in incontinence products?

Super Absorbent Polymer is a material designed to take up and retain large amounts of liquid. Once it absorbs urine, the SAP forms a gel that helps lock the fluid inside the absorbent core. This supports fluid retention and can reduce re-wet, where absorbed moisture moves back towards the surface under pressure.
